US polls: Harris takes the lead

To say the least, it was an eventful summer in American politics. But with two months to go before the election, Kamala Harris is pulling ahead of Donald Trump in the race for president, according to YouGov/Economist poll data available on the CEIC platform.

As of early September, the incumbent vice president has the support of 47% of voters, two percentage points ahead of Donald Trump's 45%.

President Joe Biden announced he would not run again in late July in the wake of a widely-criticized debate performance in June. Throughout 2024, polls had usually shown him a percentage point or more behind Donald Trump, especially after April.

The share of Americans who are not sure how they are going to vote has shrunk to about 5% from a peak of 10% in May. The number of Americans who say they won't vote has steadily declined over the course of the year; they have hovered between 1% and 2% recently.

After the Nov. 5 election, more than half of the world's population will have cast a vote in 2024.

As Biden's time in office winds down, we invite you to revisit the economic overview of his presidency that we published earlier this year -- tracking manufacturing, trade, employment trends and more.
